A dark and riveting tale of three backpackers who venture into a remote slot canyon in the vast wilderness of northern Arizona. After stumbling upon a field of marijuana, they are kidnapped by two ruthless pot growers. This story describes their attempt to escape these criminals, a devastating flash flood, and, worst of all, skinwalkers, evil spirits of Navajo legend. Caroline, the wife of Russell May, one of the backpackers, goes on a harrowing adventure to search for the party when they don't return on time. This is a must read for those who enjoy mystery and adventure. Photograph by the author.

Russ, a police detective takes his teenage son, Eddie, and the son's best friend, Jake, on a backpacking trip into the wilderness of the Grand Canyon. The three are experienced hikers; however, the perils they faced, that consume their efforts to stay alive, was not what they had anticipated.Almost from the beginning the three are fighting evil and the elements to survive. Human badness, as well as the elements of nature, seem to lurk around every corner. Hidden marijuana crops, kidnapping by the marijuana farmers, broken ribs, gunshot wounds, and life threatening fights with the kidnappers rule the day. Mother Nature also seems to be against them as she sends premature monsoons to flood the canyons in which the worn and bedraggled hikers are traveling. The whole trip becomes a nightmare for the three backpackers.
The reader might almost get goose bumples when an aggressive raven, missing a middle tail feather, keeps appearing on the scene. Then there are the wolf sightings; however, the hikers know that wolves do not inhabit this area. Bare human footprints are visible in this very rugged terrain. The hikers have heard tales of skinwalkers. Did that wolf suddenly turn into a man and then back into a wolf and instantly disappear? Could there really be such a thing as a skinwalker?
Meanwhile, back at home, things get a little off track also. A one night stand extramarital affair, a murder and a search and rescue mission add to the suspense.
I think there could have been a bit more info, on the history or legends of skinwalkers, for those that might not be familiar with the legend of these spirits. Whether one believes in such tales or not, the reader may be gasping for air when the sinister being keeps showing up. There were enough tense moments to keep me turning the pages in support of the very likable good guys. I did not; however, like the story ending. After all was said and done I was looking forward to a happy conclusion. This was not the case. All in all this was an enjoyable thriller. The characters are well portrayed, and the setting appears to be well researched. This is a keep you on the edge of your seat kind of book. There is enough suspense to keep your adrenalin flowing until you read the last page.

Black Creek Canyon edition by Barton A Stegman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Black Creek Canyon Stegman has done more than give us a page-turner, though he does that quite well. He has put in the research for this story and has obviously studied the locale close-up. Good writing in every way! As a fellow teacher, I give him a solid "A" and hope more books will follow.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The landscape is beautifully descriptive. I found myself scaling treacherous walls and dodging death along with the well rounded cast of characters. I liked the differing perspectives. I am an author myself and I chose to use that format for my first novel so seeing it here was very exciting. I felt like the story was absolutely believable. I love the suspense of danger that the characters face from the canyons themselves, the human enemies they come up against and the sinister beings that may or may not be out to harm them. I would have loved a little more back story on the Skinwalkers but if you are familiar with them, as I am ,then the mention of them is sure to send chills down your spine. I would definitely recommend this book for those who like to be spooked. I can't wait to read more from this author.
I couldn't stop reading. Just when I think I know what will happen, a new twist emerges. Stegman brings life to the characters.
I couldn't put this book down once I started it. It moves fast and propels you to the next page. Yet Stegman still takes the time to develop real characters that you care about and describe the stunning beauty of the Soutwest. I enjoyed this book thoroughly from beginning to end and eagerly anticipate the author's next novel. Great read!
Filled with gems of social commentary and beautiful descriptions of the natural wonders of Northern Arizona, Black Creek Canyon also manages to tell a story that captivates the reader. The characters spring to life with amazing detail which makes them believable, even when a couple are possessed with supernatural abilities. Stegman writes with a flair that entices the reader to continue until all trails have found their end, because you never know what is around the next bend!
This book is wonderful, and Bart successfully allows me to be in Black Creek Canyon. I am impressed, and looking forward to more novels from him.
Interesting first book by this author. It is clear that he has spent a lot of time in the area in which the story is based. Lots of good natural and cultural history thrown in as well. Looking forward to reading more of his future work.
